Why you need a short link for WhatsApp
WhatsApp is the most-used messaging app in the world — over 2 billion people use it daily. But sharing links on WhatsApp has a problem: long URLs look messy in chat, get cut off in statuses, and are impossible to type from a printed flyer or business card.
A short link fixes all of that. Instead of sharing:
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20Instagram%20post%20and%20want%20to%20know%20more
You share:
alshorty.com/link/wa-chat
Clean, trackable, and shareable anywhere — including your Instagram bio, TikTok profile, email signature, and printed materials.
This guide covers two things: how to build the right WhatsApp link in the first place, and how to shorten it so you can track every click.
Part 1: How WhatsApp links work (wa.me format)
WhatsApp has an official link format called wa.me. When someone taps a wa.me link, WhatsApp opens automatically — no need to save the number first.
Basic wa.me format
https://wa.me/[country-code][phone-number]
Rules:
- Include the full country code — no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes
- Remove the leading zero from the local number
Examples:
| Country | Local number | wa.me link |
|---|---|---|
| India (+91) | 098765 43210 | wa.me/919876543210 |
| UAE (+971) | 050 123 4567 | wa.me/971501234567 |
| UK (+44) | 07911 123456 | wa.me/447911123456 |
| USA (+1) | (415) 555-0100 | wa.me/14155550100 |
Add a pre-filled message
You can pre-fill the message the user sees when WhatsApp opens. This is especially useful for businesses — the user just hits Send without typing anything.
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20know%20more%20about%20your%20services
The ?text= part is URL-encoded — spaces become %20, commas become %2C. You don't need to do this manually. The Alshorty UTM Builder handles encoding automatically when you paste your message.
Or build it simply:
- Write your message in plain text
- Paste it into a URL encoder (or use our tool)
- Append it as
?text=your-encoded-message
WhatsApp Business: use a different format
If you're using WhatsApp Business with a verified account, you can also use the api.whatsapp.com format:
https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=919876543210&text=Hello
Both formats work. wa.me is shorter and cleaner, so it's better for shortening.
Part 2: How to shorten your WhatsApp link
Now that you have your wa.me link, shorten it so it's shareable everywhere and trackable.
Step 1: Copy your full wa.me link
Build your link using the format above. Example:
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20to%20know%20more%20about%20your%20products
Step 2: Paste it into Alshorty
- Go to alshorty.com
- Paste your wa.me link into the shortener box
- Optionally set a custom alias — e.g.
wa-chatorcontact-us - Click Shorten
Your short link is ready: alshorty.com/link/wa-chat
Step 3: Share it everywhere
Your short WhatsApp link now works in:
- Instagram bio — paste it as your profile link
- WhatsApp status — share it so followers can tap to open a new chat
- Email signature — "Chat on WhatsApp →"
- Business card / flyer — print it as text or generate a QR code (Alshorty generates one automatically)
- Website CTA button — "Message us on WhatsApp"
- Twitter / X bio — one clean link instead of a long wa.me URL
Part 3: Track who clicked your WhatsApp link
This is where shortening a WhatsApp link becomes genuinely powerful — and something raw wa.me links can't do at all.
Every click on your Alshorty short link is tracked with:
- Total clicks — how many times the link was tapped
- Country — where your clicks are coming from
- Device — mobile, desktop, tablet (almost all WhatsApp clicks will be mobile)
- Browser / OS — Android or iOS, Chrome or Safari
- Referrer — where the click came from (note: WhatsApp often sends "Direct" — see below)
- Date and time — when the link was clicked
To view your analytics:
- Open your Alshorty dashboard
- Find your WhatsApp link in the list
- Click the analytics icon — the full panel opens
Why WhatsApp clicks often show as "Direct"
WhatsApp strips the HTTP Referer header before sending the user to your link. This means clicks that originate from WhatsApp often appear as "Direct" in your referrer data — the same as someone typing your URL into a browser.
This is a known limitation of referrer tracking across all messaging apps (iMessage, Telegram, and WeChat have the same behaviour).
The fix: use UTM parameters. UTM data travels in the URL itself, not in request headers — so WhatsApp can't strip it.
Part 4: Add UTM tracking to your WhatsApp link
If you want to see WhatsApp traffic correctly attributed in Google Analytics — and in Alshorty's own UTM tab — add UTM parameters to your destination URL before shortening.
Here's the pattern to use for WhatsApp:
| Parameter | Recommended value | Why |
|---|---|---|
utm_source | whatsapp | Identifies the platform |
utm_medium | social or messaging | Groups WhatsApp with other social channels |
utm_campaign | may-promo, bio-link, broadcast | Tells you which specific message or campaign |
Your destination URL with UTM parameters:
https://yoursite.com/products?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=may-promo
Then build your wa.me link using this UTM-tagged URL as the redirect destination, and shorten the whole thing.
In Alshorty, you can add UTM parameters directly in the shortener's Advanced options — you don't need to manually edit the URL.
Part 5: Create a WhatsApp QR code
Every Alshorty short link automatically gets a QR code. This is useful for:
- Business cards — print the QR, customer scans it, WhatsApp opens with a pre-filled message
- Shop signage — "Scan to chat with us on WhatsApp"
- Product packaging — drive post-purchase support conversations
- Event materials — speakers sharing their WhatsApp contact in presentations
To get your QR code:
- Open your dashboard
- Find the WhatsApp short link
- Click the QR icon
- Download as SVG (print-ready, any size) or PNG
The QR code redirects through your short link — so every scan is counted as a click and tracked in your analytics.
WhatsApp link use cases by business type
| Business type | Where to share | Pre-filled message idea |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant / food delivery | Instagram bio, flyer QR, Google listing | "Hi, I'd like to place an order" |
| Freelancer / consultant | Email signature, LinkedIn, portfolio site | "Hi, I'd like to discuss a project" |
| Real estate agent | Property listing, business card QR | "Hi, I'm interested in the property you listed" |
| E-commerce store | Product page, order confirmation email | "Hi, I need help with my order" |
| Creator / influencer | Bio page, TikTok, YouTube about | "Hi, I want to collaborate" |
| Education / tutor | Class flyers, school notice board QR | "Hi, I'd like to know about your classes" |
Common mistakes to avoid
1. Sharing the raw wa.me URL without shortening
Long wa.me links with encoded text look untrustworthy in chat and get cut off in statuses. Always shorten before sharing publicly.
2. Including the + in your country code
The wa.me format does not use a +. Use wa.me/919876543210, not wa.me/+919876543210. Some devices handle the + correctly, but it's not reliable across all platforms and apps.
3. Not URL-encoding your pre-filled message
Spaces and special characters in your message must be URL-encoded. A space is %20, a comma is %2C, an apostrophe is %27. Unencoded messages may not work correctly on all devices. Use a tool to encode automatically.
4. Expecting referrer data to identify WhatsApp clicks
As covered above, WhatsApp strips referrer headers. Referrer tracking won't tell you a click came from WhatsApp. Use UTM parameters instead — they're reliable because they're part of the URL, not the request headers.
5. Using a personal number for business links
If you publish a WhatsApp link on Instagram or your website, expect a high volume of messages. Use a WhatsApp Business number — it supports quick replies, business hours, away messages, and labels. A personal number will quickly become unmanageable.

Shorten your WhatsApp link →Frequently asked questions
How do I add a country code to a WhatsApp link?
Use the wa.me format: https://wa.me/[country-code][number], with no plus sign, no spaces, and no leading zero on the local number — e.g. wa.me/919876543210 for an Indian number.
Why do my WhatsApp link clicks show as "Direct" in analytics?
WhatsApp strips the HTTP referrer header before opening a link, so clicks often appear as "Direct" rather than attributed to WhatsApp. Adding UTM parameters (like utm_source=whatsapp) to your destination URL fixes this, since UTM data travels in the URL itself, not the request headers.
Can I pre-fill a message in my WhatsApp link?
Yes — add ?text= followed by your URL-encoded message to the end of your wa.me link, so the recipient sees a pre-filled message and just has to tap send.
Does shortening a WhatsApp link still let me use a QR code?
Yes — every Alshorty short link automatically gets a QR code, so a printed WhatsApp QR code (for a business card or shop sign) opens directly into a chat when scanned.
